Top 5 things you can do...to reduce Climate Change

Top 5 Things You Can Do

 1.     Educate yourself and others.
·       Talk to your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers, club members, and fellow worshippers about global warming.
·       Sign up for e-mail alerts and news feeds from reputable websites to stay informed about new developments.  Here are some recommended sites:
·       Learn how to respond to denial with scientific facts.  Here are some tips.

2.     Demand change at the international, national, and regional levels.
·       Advocate for ambitious international treaties to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  Here is some information on the history of climate change treaties.
·       Advocate for national legislation and regulation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and urge legislators to support regulatory agencies, such as the EPA and DEC.
·       Advocate for investment in the research and infrastructure needed to provide our energy and transportation needs using renewable sources.
·       Attend town/village/city council meetings and urge local conservation and emission reduction, including opposition to hydrofracking, which releases greenhouse gases in addition to its other environmental and health risks.
·       Attend rallies, protests, and other events to raise awareness and demand action.  Here is a list of events in New York City for Climate Week 2014, and don’t forget to attend our regional rally in Fredonia, New York, on September 20, 2014.

3.     Switch to renewable energy.
·       Sign up with your energy company for sustainably produced energy.  Use electricity in your home guilt-free!
·       Install solar panels on your house or property.
·       Ask your employer and community institutions to do the same.
·       Ask your alma mater to make the switch to renewable energy, and indicate that your continued support depends on it.

4.     Divest from fossil fuels and related industries, and invest in renewable energy.
·       Here is some information on environmentally friendly investing.
·       Ask your employer and community institutions to do the same.

5.     Conserve energy in your home, vehicles, workplace, and community, and consider your food choices.
·       If your electricity, home heating, and/or other utilities are provided by fossil fuels, here are some conservation tips.
·       Ask your employer and other institutions to use energy conservation practices.
·       Consider carpooling, biking, and other ways to reduce motor vehicle use.  Remember that carpooling isn’t just for work – how about carpooling to the grocery store?
·       When replacing your car, look for a model with high gas mileage, and consider purchasing a hybrid or electric vehicle, especially if you have switched to sustainably produced electricity.
·       Reduce meat consumption and purchase food that is produced locally using sustainable practices.  The estimates of contributions to atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations from livestock vary from 18% to over 50%, taking into account direct emissions and deforestation for grazing.
